IIN Chat: American Health Facts

"America doesn't have a healthcare system. We have a disease management system." - Andrew Weil, IIN lecturer As some of you already know, in January I started school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a certified health coach. The school offers an awesome flexible yearlong program, and I'm in the thick of it and loving it. Every week I feel engaged in the lessons, and it's great how I can listen to the lectures anywhere on my iPad. As I recently mentioned, lately I've gone to the beach a few times to do school work, which provides just about the perfect setting for relaxing while learning! In February I did a recap of my first month of school, and I was planning on doing a post on my favorite ideas and concepts for each month I'm in school... but somehow a few ... [Read More]

IIN Chat: What’s a Health Coach?

Happy Wednesday! I feel like this week is just flying by! I've been super busy, and my work week is short because I'm heading down to San Diego on Friday (more on the exciting reason behind my trip to come soon!). Last night my hubby and I had a rare weekday date night. I had gotten him tickets to see Kings of Leon as a Christmas gift, so we headed into San Jose to see them perform. The concert was a lot of fun! :) Moving along to the topic of today's post, after doing a recap of my first month as a student at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition (a second one to come in the near future!), a couple of people asked me to go more in-depth as to what a health coach is. So let's get into it! At IIN, health coaches are believed to be the future of our healthcare system. At ... [Read More]

Institute for Integrative Nutrition: Month 1 Recap

I've mentioned it a few times since I started, but in mid-January I became a student at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. The school is a yearlong course to become a certified health coach, and so far I've really enjoyed every single week. Not only am I a bit of a nerd in general who loves school and learning, but at IIN, I'm learning about topics related to a huge passion of mine (which you may have figured out by now!): healthy living. I thought it'd be fun to do a monthly recap post where I share some of my favorite concepts and ideas from the lessons, so this is recap #1! First off, how the school operates: I love how classes are set up to fit into a busy schedule. The school has an app so that you can listen to the lectures on your iPhone or do work on your iPad ... Weekend R&R: Wine Sipping in the Rain

Hi friends! Hope you all had a glorious weekend and made it through your Monday well. The weekend here in the Bay Area was a dark, rainy one. We barely have gotten rain at all in the past year, and now it has been gloomy and rainy probably 6 out of the past 10 days. Crazy mother nature! Some notable eats of my weekend include this butternut squash enchilada casserole, recipe a la Sarah at Making Thyme for Health: A "quick run" into Whole Foods turned into me walking around for longer than expected, spending way more money than expected - but when does this not happen when I go to Whole Foods? I get a little too excited there, especially with my February gluten free diet. It's like the gluten free food mecca! My favorite find was Kind Healthy Grains Cinnamon Oat Clusters with Flax ... Blueberry Lemon Oatmeal Flaxseed Pancakes

Hi there! Before I get to my awesome pancake recipe today, I have a few random things to share with you: 1.) This week I officially started school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition! I'm really excited about the class and connecting with other students. I just feel like everything I've read, seen, and heard so far at IIN resonates with me so much and makes me feel so motivated. I'll definitely be sharing some concepts and ideas of the course that I find interesting throughout the year, so stay tuned! 2.) I'm in love with ordering canvas prints of neat photos I've taken. The above canvas is my latest order, which I got for $20 via a Groupon deal. The picture is from my trip to Livermore Valley last year during harvest season, and I'm pretty much in love with it. 3.) My giveaway ... [Read More]

Five Facts Friday

Happy weekend! I'm sitting by my roaring fireplace with my Christmas tree lit, wrapped up in a warm blanket, hanging out with my little family. Not too shabby for a cozy Friday night at home! Like my new yogi Santa ornament? I'm hopping on the "Five Facts Friday" bandwagon tonight and sharing some random stuff from happenings of the week, so here we go: #1 -- In honor of the passing of the great Nelson Mandela, here are a couple of quotes from him that I love: "Education is the most powerful weapon, which we can use to change the world." "I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward." "Resentment is like drinking poison and then ... [Read More]

Unpopular opinion: We put too much pressure on Mother’s Day.

Sure, it’s a day when moms can be pampered, choose what they want to do, and kick back a little bit more than usual…

..but if your kid throws a tantrum or your husband forgets to get you a gift or everything doesn’t go according to plan, in reality, it’s just another day.

Moms should be thanked by their families any day of the week.
Moms should feel “free” to not do it all any day of the month.
Moms should be able to practice self-care, guilt-free, any day of the year.

Leave a ‘❤️’ if you’re all about dropping the unrealistic expectations & just having a fun family day on Mother’s Day!

I’ve really been enjoying wine country living over the past 1.5 years! 🥂☀️So far I’ve tasted at almost half of the nearly 50 wineries, & here are the stand outs for me thus far:

MY FAVORITES —
-Monte de Oro ~ Joined their wine club & have hung out here countless times 🙌🏼 Their wines are awesome, the staff is friendly & they have an expansive patio. Bonus: they decorate so wonderfully for Christmas! @montedeoro
-Leoness ~ Yummy reds, the views here are lovely & they usually have live music Fri-Sun, + their beautifully curated store is my favorite in the valley for grabbing wine country gifts. Also joined the wine club @leonesscellars

GREAT FOR PICNICKING —
-Masia de La Vinya ~ Offering Spanish style wines & lots of outdoor seating on their patio, patrons are free to bring food to this boutique winery Sun-Fri @masiadelavinyawinery (note: children are not allowed on Saturdays)

MY TOP PICK FOR A DATE —
-Europa ~ Offering not one, not two, but THREE tasting rooms (Italian, Spanish & French styles), Europa has picturesque grounds, a resort & Spanish restaurant, making it a perfect pick to relax at & stay awhile! @europavillage

FUN WITH KIDS —
-Peltzer ~ @peltzerwinery has some great kid-friendly events, including a fall pumpkin patch, winter skating rink & movie nights. Note: Most of the time they’re only kid-friendly Sun-Thurs.
-Longshadow Ranch ~ @longshadowranchwinery is a Temecula winery with a western flair that has animals to visit with, regular family-friendly events & a small playground to entertain kiddos while the adults try the wines. Also nice for picnicking! Try their port in a chocolate boot 🍫 I’ve also heard they regularly have bonfire nights, which are on my bucket list to make it to soon.

I had so much fun exploring with my little one over her 2-week kindergarten spring break! I packed in the adventures & here are 5️⃣ of our San Diego outing highlights:

1️⃣ Sand n Straw Farm - This adorable family-owned Vista farm is open on Wed 1-4 & Sat 9-1. We visited to feed the animals, shop & taste at the little farm stand & enjoy the play area! They’re newly offering locally made sourdough & other baked goodies, which I can’t wait go back and try. The farm also offers kids’ camps & classes.

2️⃣ Sesame Place - We had a great time during our first Sesame Place visit! Elmo’s Eggstravaganza Easter celebration is taking place & tix are mega on sale this month. While the water park part of the park is closed because it’s not hot enough yet, we had a BLAST going on all of the rides, meeting the characters & going to a few park events. The best part? We went mid-week and didn’t have to wait on lines at all!

3️⃣ Little Italy Mercato Farmers’ Market - This extensive Wed & Sat market is one of my favorites in the world, with every type of cuisine, local produce and local artisans totaling 150+ vendors! My daughter was excited to pick out berries, fresh bread & lemonade here - & of course get a balloon 🎈

4️⃣ San Diego Botanic Garden - The botanic garden has beautiful gardens, awesome play areas, and kids’ craft mornings! This is one of our go-to spots & we just re-upped our membership here.

5️⃣ Coronado Beach - The wide sandy shoreline offers views of the iconic @delcoronado, is great for kiddos & there’s a nice dog beach area. Love this beach & Coronado Island in general!

Where do you want to visit most? Locals, which one is your fav?

All of these gems are on The Big Island, HI 🌊🌞📍

Which would you pick to visit if you could only choose one?

I loved all of these beaches, but suppose I’m picking Kua Bay since it was the only beach we visited twice on our Big Island trip a few weeks ago! Though it’s not exactly a hidden gem and is a popular spot with pretty small beach space, the water is gorgeous, the waves are perfect if you’re swimming with kiddos, and it was one of the only beaches we visited on the Big Island that wasn’t covered in rough rocks.
