IIN Chat: American Health Facts

“America doesn’t have a healthcare system. We have a disease management system.” – Andrew Weil, IIN lecturer

As some of you already know, in January I started school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to become a certified health coach. The school offers an awesome flexible yearlong program, and I’m in the thick of it and loving it. Every week I feel engaged in the lessons, and it’s great how I can listen to the lectures anywhere on my iPad. As I recently mentioned, lately I’ve gone to the beach a few times to do school work, which provides just about the perfect setting for relaxing while learning! IIN Mission In February I did a recap of my first month of school, and I was planning on doing a post on my favorite ideas and concepts for each month I’m in school… but somehow a few months have flown by! Whoopsies. I want to get back to sharing things with you guys that I’ve learned at IIN more frequently, so today I’m talking about some stats I’ve noted from recent lectures about the health of Americans.

Warning: Some of these stats are downright scary! Talking about some of this info makes me more eager to get out there and start coaching. Knowing that I have the potential to improve the quality of people’s lives through health coaching is very exciting. Here we go:

  • Fact: Americans now eat more than a million chickens AN HOUR….That’s 9 billion chickens each year.
  • Stat: The average American gets 62% of their calories from processed foods and 27-30% from animal products.

That leaves just roughly 10% for fruit & vegetable consumption! Fruits and veggies provide us with so many vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants that are beneficial to our health in so many ways. We need to eat more produce in order to lead healthier lives, simple as that. produce-1

  • Fact: 1 out of every 3 Americans has cancer.

That fact is just so sad, but think about, who out there doesn’t know someone who has died of cancer? I think that more of an effort needs to be made to educate people on cancer prevention versus just on finding a cure. Of course a cure is needed and would be nothing less of amazing, but we need to also focus on how to reduce our risk of getting cancer in the first place.

  • Stat: 25 million Americans are affected by osteoporosis.

While increased calcium consumption has been recommended, research has found that those who drink more milk have a higher rate of bone fractures. One major reason why? Because the body need many nutrients working together for good bone health, such as magnesium, phosphorus, copper, zinc and Vitamin C, D and B6.

By the way, milk and dairy products aren’t the only calcium sources available. Vegan sources of calcium include leafy greens like kale and collared greens, blackstrap molasses, tempeh, soy beans, figs and amaranth. US Obesity

(source)

  • Fact: 70% of Americans are considered overweight.

(Unfortunately that’s no shock.)

  • Stat: The U.S. has the third greatest amount of people with Type 2 diabetes in the world (#2 is China and #1 is India, which I was surprised to hear).

Tidbits on diabetes: It’s the leading cause of kidney disease, blindness and amputations. Those suffering from diabetes are also 2-4x more likely to have a heart attack. flat belly diet

  • Fact: Today in the U.S. there are over 15,000 diet books in print.

No wonder why most people are confused about nutrition huh?

  • Stat: It has been estimated that there are 88 workers per 1 BILLION pounds of meat produced in America.

cattle-feedlot

(source)

…..and this is why food safety in the meat industry is a major concern!!

  • Fact: It’s estimated that healthcare related to obesity costs the U.S. $147 billion dollars annually.
  • Stat: The average American teenager consumers 33 TSP of sugar each day.
  • Fact: 95% of Americans don’t know what quinoa is…

Red_quinoa

(source)

….which, by the way, has the highest nutritional profile of all the grains out there!

So there you have it, some startling facts about the American diet. What are your thoughts/comments on these stats? Are you surprised by any of this?

If you want to learn more about IIN’s program, I talked about it more in-depth here. You can also leave a comment below, shoot me an email, or click on “Study holistic nutrition” banner on the right side over here to find out more about IIN’s program. —->

that diet book stat actually makes me sad! Some days I wish I could walk around the food/nutrition aisles at the book store and steer people in the right direction…and then I remember that people would think I am NUTS.

Wow. This info is so sad. It’s why the US desperately needs more health coaches around ( like you )!

Cool facts! I am on an RD path so I have heard all of these at one point or other and it is motivation for the people who are currently working/studying nutrition to spread the real facts and a healthy message as much as possible. The India/China tidbit isn’t too surprising considering they are the two most populated countries- the more people in a group equals higher chance of there being a high rate of diabetes! 🙂

True, though I was surprised because I’ve always thought of India and China as countries whose diets are a lot healthier than America. Unfortunately a lot of people there are probably suffering from Type 2 Diabetes because their diets have become more Americanized.

Whoa. Some of these facts are very scary. What I find so difficult in dealing with family members who don’t have stellar nutrition is that they just refuse to begin to like things like fruits, veggies or something that doesn’t have sugar in it. All these processed foods and sugar create addictions in my opinion. It is so frustrating!

Yeah, I totally hear you. It is definitely frustrating when people just don’t want to hear it. Funny you should mention food addiction – that’s going to be my next IIN chat discussion so stay tuned!

This is soooo interesting! It’s really true… I think that there are a lot of flaws in the American Diet System… but seems like we should make so (many) adjustments!! Great info!

Thanks! I know, I hope that our government can keep taking small steps in the right direction to help keep people in the know about what they’re eating and to place tighter regulations in the food industry. Food and politics are so intertwined unfortunately!

    1. LOVE the quote about our “disease management system”! So true.
    2. I just started studying for my personal training certification, so I’m starting IIN after this! – in January! Can’t wait! Figured doing both would be good since they go hand in hand.
    3. I LOVE that you are enjoying the beach & even studying there. These people that live by the beach & dont go there….?!?! Omg makes me wanna slap them! Haha

School’s out for my little girl ☀️& here are 4️⃣ screen-free tools that I’m using to keep my 6 year old busy and learning when we’re home this summer:

1️⃣ @mondaymandala’s awesome array of free digital printables on just about anything you can think of 🖍️

2️⃣ @youngwildandfriedman’s amazing sensory kits that are high-quality and last forever. I have purchased a serious amount of these play dough and sensory sand kits over the years & they are worth every penny! My kiddo will spend hours setting up all of the little trinkets and building little play dough towns.

3️⃣ @Canva’s printable educational worksheets ✏️ For instance, I printed out money worksheets & am planning on doing a money lesson that includes us emptying out her piggy bank to delve deeper into currency & paying for something she wants at the store with her own 💵

4️⃣ A @brain_quest workbook — I bought one last summer as well & we love incorporating it into little lessons at home!

Spent the day at 📍Murrieta Hot Springs & thoroughly enjoyed it there!

While we have visited numerous fun hot springs with our daughter, it was definitely nice to be out of mom mode & experience our local hot springs while our little one was in school. From hot tubs and cold plunges to saunas & clay mud, we got to kick back & enjoy it all!

This dinner at Eastern Mediterranean restaurant @ammatoli in Long Beach, CA 📍deserves a place on the grid — because sometimes, a foodie mom simply *must* book the reservation as she drools looking at the menu online, all the while having zero confidence that her mini me will be willing to eat a morsel of food there.

Our veggie-forward dishes, the ambiance & aesthetic, the service…all exquisite at Ammatolí! Swipe to see my daughter’s obsession - their mint tea! 🌿☕️ She too left a happy camper, with a belly full of tea and warm pita bread.

Celebrated the start to the spring season by baking with @imthecheftoo’s Bunny Bundts kit!

I really let Cam take the reins with this one, and while it doesn’t look exactly (or anything 😂) like the box, the bundt cakes tasted delicious and we had a great time together!

📍Murray Canyon Trail to Seven Falls is such a beautiful, scenic hike in Palm Springs 🌴

It features a palm tree oasis, rock scrambles & a number of stream crossings, which my daughter loved! When we hiked it last month, the water was high and FREEZING at the end 🥶 so bring your bathing suit if you like a cold plunge… This one was so much fun! ☀️

Details:
🥾Murray Canyon Trail to Seven Falls
👣 4+ miles out & back
⛰️ About 600 ft elevation gain
💲Must pay an entry fee at the Indian Canyons Toll Gate
❗️It was crowded when we arrived mid-morning & they do close temporarily when too many people are arriving. However, once we got to the parking lot, there was plenty of parking towards the back, closer to the trailhead.
