5 Yoga Poses & Moves to Strengthen Hip Mobility + One Tribe Apparel Giveaway!

Hi friends!

Today’s post is a fun one. First up, we’re talking about moves to strengthen & lengthen our hips, then it’s time for a giveaway!

Sometimes people think of strong hip mobility as something that only yogis and gymnasts should focus on. But the truth is, every single person can benefit from having better range of motion in their hips – from runners and weight lifters that don’t own a yoga mat, to people that don’t workout at all. Everything in our bodies is connected, and poor hip mobility can often lead to pain in other places in our bodies, like the lower back.

Today I’m sharing some of my favorite yoga poses & moves that stretch & strengthen the hips. I do these moves pretty much every day – whether during a yoga practice, at the beginning of a strength or cardio workout, or even sometimes when I’m just watching TV.

1.) Figure Four Pose. Start standing, then lift one foot off of the mat, placing the ankle on top of the other thigh. Draw your weight into your standing leg, and sink into the pose, hands in prayer. You can do Figure Four sitting or standing, but I like the shown standing variation because it also challenges your balance.

2.) Pigeon Pose. This pose is done in most yoga classes because it’s great for the hip flexors. One way to get into Pigeon is by starting on all fours, bringing one knee forward and placing it on the floor just behind your hand, with your heel pointing toward the frontal hipbone of your other leg. You can sink deeper into the pose by bringing your elbows to the ground, and you kick it up another notch by rotating behind you to grab the straight leg with your hand and bringing your foot up to hand, bending the leg.

3.) Hip Swings. I do this move nearly every day because I think it feels awesome! Start by standing on both legs, then bringing one leg off the ground, keeping it straight and bringing the foot slightly diagonal in front of you. Swing the leg out to the same side, aiming to get the leg up to hip level, then bring it back down in a controlled motion. Try to do 20 of these without your foot touching the ground, then switch sides.

Chocolate Cake Batter Hemp Super Smoothie [vegan & gf] + Bob’s Red Mill Giveaway!

Hi friends!

How’s the weather by you? It’s feeling pretty hot in SoCal this week! I realize that hot is a relative term and that some might not consider 82 degrees all that hot, but the California sun is STRONG and I don’t have air conditioning in my house… (which is a pretty common thing in SoCal) so it gets toasty!

Chocolate Super Smoothie-7

Luckily my house has lots of ceiling fans and I have a pool (which is currently 85 degrees!) to keep me cool, but some tell-tale signs of summer lately have been: a.) the fruit in my fruit basket is ripening in the blink of an eye, b.) I took coconut oil out of my kitchen pantry to bake earlier today and it was complete liquid, c.) my plants need some extra loving to stay alive, and d.) I’m drinking smoothies like it’s my job.
Chocolate Super Smoothie-2

Oh smoothies, you forever have my heart. You’re refreshing, filling, healthy (mine are at least!), and you never get boring, thanks to endless options. Today I’m sharing a brand new smoothie recipe that is perfect for those that want to fuel their healthy lifestyle…but also want their smoothie to taste like dessert! (Meeeeee!)

Chocolate Cake Batter Hemp Smoothie

Earlier this month I posted a cinnamon chai banana protein shake made with Bob’s Red Mill chai protein powder. Today, I’ve teamed up with the folks at Bob’s Red Mill to bring you another Protein Powder Nutritional Booster smoothie – along with a giveaway!

Chocolate Super Smoothie-3

This time, I used Bob’s Red Mill chocolate protein powder. As with all of their protein powders, the chocolate flavor offers a wholesome protein, fiber and probiotics boost. It’s made with pea protein powder, chicory root fiber, chia seeds, beneficial probiotics, and monk fruit extract for a touch of sweetness. It’s gluten free and vegan, along with being a  good source of omega-3 and  iron.

Chocolate Super Smoothie-1

As if the protein powder isn’t enough goodness by itself, I amped up the nutritional power in this smoothie by using omega fatty acid and protein-rich hemp hearts, heart healthy dark chocolate, potassium and manganese-rich banana, calcium & vitamin E packed almond milk, and my forever love, peanut butter.

Chocolate Super Smoothie-4

The addition of vanilla, cocoa, and cinnamon gives this smoothie a cake batter taste. I won’t lie, it’s pretty awesome!

Superfood Chocolate PB Chia Smoothie + Amazing Grass Giveaway!

We all know that eating a healthy diet tends to most often be associated with looking good, but there’s more to eating well than the physical results of those smart choices. Fueling with high-quality foods that nourish my body help me to not just survive, but to thrive. With every task and moment of my day, from completing a writing assignment to finishing a challenging workout, consuming a high-quality diet enables my body and mind to perform at its best.

Amazing Grass campaign image-2

The concept is simple: If you constantly eat crap, your body is going to (eventually) respond to your low-quality diet by feeling tired, lethargic and gaining weight, among other things. If you consistently fuel your body right with high-quality food, your body should respond by feeling amazing. The millions of cells that make up our bodies are constantly regenerating, and just what our newest cells are made of is dependent on the food we’ve been fueling it with.

One major way that I make sure to fuel properly is by following my #1 diet trick of eating fruits and/or veggies at every single meal. I eat a ton of whole foods, and since I lead a very active, busy lifestyle, I also consume a smoothie almost daily that’s supplemented with a high-quality protein. Lately I’ve been using the Protein Superfood from Amazing Grass, and today I’m teaming up with them to bring you a superfood smoothie recipe & giveaway!

Choc Chia Smoothie-1

Amazing Grass has been growing, harvesting, and dehydrating organic greens at its family farm in Kansas for over 50 years. All of their products are plant-based, non-GMO, and sustainably farmed, and the new Protein Superfood line is a complete plant-based protein made with greens, fruits & veggies.

Their organic Protein Superfood powders contain hemp, chia, quinoa, and pea protein, along with 7 alkalizing greens and 9 nutrient-dense fruits & veggies (including wheat, barley, & alfalfa grass, acai & goji, pineapple, sweet potato & more!). They’re also gluten free and contain no added sugars. THIS is the kind of high-quality fuel that I’m talking about!

Amazing Grass Choc PB protein

The Protein Superfood line includes vanilla, original, and chocolate peanut butter flavors, and being the chocolate & nut butter lover that I am, I naturally chose the chocolate PB to try out.

Choc Chia Smoothie-2

This smoothie features my favorite blender fruit, the potassium-rich banana, along with omega-3 and fiber-rich chia seeds. Many people are deficient in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, and chia seeds are a great way to sneak both into your diet! The smoothie also includes two of my favorite ingredients that add in flavor without calories, cinnamon + vanilla extract.

This superfood recipe has been fueling my healthy on-the-go lifestyle, and I hope that you try it out too!

5 Healthy On-the-Go Snack Ideas + Big Slice Apples Giveaway!

Hi friends!

Today I’m traveling cross-country to be with my family in New Jersey for the holidays. I’m looking forward to lots of time with loved ones and fun!

Speaking of being on-the-go, today I wanted to share my top picks for on-the-go snacks as of late. Since I’m big on eating small meals frequently, it seems like I’m always eating in the car. An ongoing joke that I have with my hubby is that I’m constantly trying to get food stains off the seat of my car. Nearly every week there’s a new protein bar stain or smudge of some sort. I guess I’m a messy car eater!

Healthy Snacks Collage

The basic requirements for snacks to be in the running to become a favorite of mine are simple. They’ve got to be 1.) healthy – must pack a nutritious punch, and 2.) tasty – I won’t eat it if it doesn’t please my palette people! I also love when I can get a serving of fruit/veggies in with a snack too. Here are some of my current favorite snacks:

Rise bar

Rise Bars. A few months ago the folks at Rise Bar reached out and offered to send me some of their bars to try… and I’ve been enjoying them ever since! My favorite flavor is almond honey, which packs in 20 grams of protein and contains only 3 simple ingredients: almonds, honey, and high-quality Whey Protein Isolate. I love super short ingredient lists! I also really like their carob chip bar flavor.

Note: I just noticed that the Rise Bar website is offering free shipping on any order through 12/25 by using the code HOLIDAYSHIP.

walnut hemp energy balls-HA

Energy Balls. Date bites are great for grabbing on-the-go. It’s simple to whip up a batch, and then I have it around for a week or two to nab when I need a little something. Recent favorites include the pictured oatmeal walnut hemp energy balls and mint chocolate chip date balls.

TJ dried apple slices

Dried Apple Slices. These are in my carry-on bag right now so that I can munch on some apple slices on the plane today! I like how a bag is 1 serving & 130 calories, so I can munch away and get my Vitamin C in for the day.

Boost Your Immunity This Holiday Season with Green Juice + Daily Greens Giveaway!

Happy December everyone!

Can you believe that it’s the start of the holiday season? I was happy to get a lot of Christmas shopping done online in the past week. I love shopping without leaving the comfort of my cozy couch!

Hippocrates-Food as Medicine

Any who, December seems to be the time when many of us fall prey to sniffles and sore throats. With most of us coming across more germs than usual between holiday parties, family get togethers, traveling, and being out and about shopping, plus the colder weather that many are faced with this time of the season, people are bound to get under the weather.

I’ve gotten an upper respiratory thing more than a few times over the holidays. It’s usually the only time that I ever get sick, and while a cold is just a cold, I find it very annoying. It bogs me down and makes me tired, headachy and lethargic. I dread it, which is why I’ve been serious the last couple of years about implementing a couple of proven strategies into my life this time of the year – one of which is getting in plenty of green juice.

Cleansing-Juice-Ingredients

Oh, green juice. You jam so many vitamins, antioxidants, and minerals into just one glass or container. All of that goodness helps to build your immune system and combat whatever germs are coming your way!

I like to drink one most mornings to start my day off nice and healthy. I love knowing that by 8 am, I’ve already had a good 4-6 servings of veggies & fruits. Here are a few of my favorite at-home juicing recipes:

And because I can get lazy with my juicer – that thing is the worst to clean, plus I’m usually super busy in the morning getting my day started – sometimes I nab some fresh juices from the store for an easy grab-and-go option.

Daily Greens

Recently Daily Greens contacted me and offered to send me some of their new Probiotic Half Pint Smoothies to try. I love trying new types of juices, and I was even more intrigued by their juices’ added probiotics cultures, which help to support the immune system as part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to pancake ideas. In the summer I’m all about incorporating berries into my pancakes, and now that it’s autumn, I’m into seasonal pancakes that focus on foods like pumpkin and apple. autumn pancakes-1

Easy Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Yogurt Muffins {+ Mighty Nut Powdered PB Giveaway!}

Nut butter, oh how I love you so.

At any given time, there are probably 10 jars of nut butter in my pantry. I most often spread it on fruit or throw it in my smoothies for some extra creaminess and flavor. I also am a fan of incorporating peanut/cashew/almond butter into my baked goods, like today’s muffin recipe.

banana pb muffins-6

One brand of nut butter that you’ll always find in my kitchen is Peanut Butter & Co. I especially love their Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter! While I love smooth nut butter, powdered peanut butter is also a staple in my kitchen. So, you could imagine my excitement when I got involved in a Fit Approach collaboration with Peanut Butter & Co. to experiment in the kitchen with their new powdered peanut butter line, Mighty Nut.

banana pb muffins-5Created from quality USA grown peanuts, Mighty Nut is a non-GMO powdered peanut butter line made by roasting and pressing the peanuts. What remains is the protein, fiber and delicious peanut buttery taste – but much less fat and calories. Mighty Nut is now available in 4 varieties:

  • Original
  • Vanilla
  • Chocolate
  • Flax & Chia

I decided to come up with a muffin recipe that gives you lots of chocolatey and peanut buttery goodness, while also being low in fat and calories. These wholesome, gluten free babies were the result:

Let’s discuss…

For the base of the muffins we’ve got some oats and Mighty Nut chocolate powdered peanut butter.

Aurorae Yoga Mat Towel Review & Giveaway!

Hi there!

Today I’ve got a fun giveaway for you guys! Recently the folks at Aurorae sent me a yoga product of theirs, called the Synergy Mat Towel, to try out. I was intrigued by the mat because of its built-in non-slip microfiber towel.

Aurorae mat-5

I had never seen a yoga mat with a built-in towel before, and it sounded like a brilliant idea to me. I had owned a few yoga mats already, but wasn’t in love with them because of how I seemed to find myself slipping around on the mat once I started sweating and getting into my workout. I was interested to see if Aurorae’s mat would eliminate this annoyance.  Aurorae Mat Giveaway

Aurorae is a yoga, fitness & aromatherapy e-retailer that has recently expanded into a number of new divisions, including apparel and outdoor accessories such as beach towels. They’re a small family business who keeps customer service and satisfaction as their main priority as they operate in the spirit of yoga.

Mediterranean Freekeh Salad + Giveaway

You know how people sometimes say that the little things are the big things? Well I’m a big believer that little things can make a huge difference when it comes to recipes.

Freekah salad

Take garlic for instance: Use too much of it and it totally kills the dish for me (and the entire 24 hours afterwards when I’m burping up garlic!), don’t use any and it might taste like it’s missing something. Another good example is herbs: Using fresh ones can make all the difference in the world, and you don’t even need to use a lot to make it pop in a dish, because herbs are fragrant and awesome in tiny quantities.

garden bed herbs

My garden bed of herbs

Two of my favorite herbs are basil and mint. I use basil all the time because it’s fabulous in so many dishes, and mint is great for an extra flavor oomph when paired with the right ingredients.

The dish that I’m sharing today exemplifies just what I mean about the little things going a long way in recipes: a drizzle of high-quality olive oil, a bit of fresh lemon juice, just enough salt and pepper, and just a tablespoon of chopped fresh mint to give this salad lots of flavor.
Freekah salad-4

When Fit Approach partnered with Freekeh Foods to collaborate with some bloggers like myself to come up with recipes incorporating freekeh, I was interested because I had never even heard of freekeh before.

freekeh defined

Last weekend I put my creative food blogger hat on to cook freekeh for the first time and come up with a fun dish, which wound up being a healthy recipe with a Mediterranean flair:

Elfin Forest view-6.19.15

{HIKING} On Friday evening I took my pup for a hike at Elfin Forest, and all of a sudden, it felt like summer had began. It was a sunny, 75 degree day at my house, but 30 minutes away at Elfin, it was in the low 90s and hot. This is the start of me having to check how hot it is inland before going for hikes, because Harley does not do that well hiking in the heat.
