10 Healthy Snacks & Drinks to Enjoy During At-Home Movie Night

Love having at-home movie nights? Check out these 10 healthy snacks & drinks that’ll make your movie nights delicious while still keeping it healthy. 

At-home movie nights are great.

Even before the COVID pandemic hit and turned us all into cozy weekenders, and before becoming a mom made me much more likely to be home on a Saturday night, I enjoyed relaxing on my couch watching a movie with my husband – with yummy snacks in hand of course. 

Instead of munching on snacks & drinks packed with high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated palm oil and Red 40 dye, I opt for healthy snacks that I can feel good about consuming. That way I can have my cake and eat it too, so to speak! After all, who says you can’t enjoy yourself and still keep your healthy diet on track? 

My sweet & salty granola bars (new recipe at Shape) make for an awesome homemade snack. 

A few weekends ago, we had our first family movie matinee. We set up our camping sleeping bags up in the living room and broke out the snacks. My 2-year old watched a movie on her kid’s player while my husband and I watched a movie we’ve been wanting to see on the big screen. This kind of thing was not possible when my daughter was any younger, and I think it’s a sign that she’s growing up! I see more weekend movie matinees in our future, and I’m definitely excited about it. 

Today, I’m sharing 10 products I love that are perfect for at-home movie day/night snacking. They’re healthier options than your run-of-the-mill candy, chocolate, salty snacks, and beverages – and they taste great too! 

10 Healthy Snacks & Drinks That are Perfect for At-Home Movie Nights

Hippeas Chickpea Puffs.

My toddler and I both love Hippeas Chickpea Puffs. They’re a healthy alternative to Cheetos, and instead of being made with cheese seasoning and Yellow 6 artificial coloring, Hippeas’ plant-based ingredient lists include chickpea and rice flours + onion & garlic powders. My favorite flavors are Nacho Vibes and White Cheddar, and I love that they have 4 grams of protein & 3 grams of fiber in a serving. 

DelishFish Candy.

Made with organic cane sugar, organic tapioca syrup, and organic pear juice concentrate, Surf Sweet’s DelishFish are my go-to gummy candy. They’re colored with blackcurrant and carrot, and they’re vegan so they’re not made with gelatin like many gummy candies. 

Health Ade Kombucha Cocktails.

Health Ade Kombucha is a bubbly fermented tea loaded with probiotics and healthy acids – both of which support a healthy gut. Lately when I want a fun drink but don’t feel like consuming alcohol, I make a kombucha cocktail. My favorite Health Ade flavors are Watermelon, Pink Lady Apple, and Strawberry Glow.

Here’s my simple recipe to make one kombucha cocktail:  

  1. Juice 1/2 lemon. Add it to a glass, and stir in 3 ounces of water + 2 TSP monk fruit sweetener.
  2. Add in 6 ounces of kombucha. Stir to combine, then pour into a glass with ice. 

Pop Zero Popcorn.

Made with algae oil and pea protein, Pop Zero popcorn strikes a great balance of sweet & salty with simple, healthy ingredients. Their cinnamon flavor is my favorite, and you can’t beat just 40 calories in a cup! 

UNREAL Dark Chocolate Peanut Gems.

Skip the peanut M&Ms and opt for UNREAL’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Gems – a delicious chocolatey treat made with all natural ingredients like dark chocolate, roasted peanuts and beet juice (for coloring). 

Flow Alkaline Spring Water.

Trying to stick to water but want something more fun & flavorful? Flow Water infuses its alkaline spring water with organic flavors, creating a subtle, refreshing way to hydrate. I’m a fan of their Watermelon + Lime & Strawberry + Rose flavors. 

Mid-Day Squares Superfood Peanut Butta Chocolate. 

As the name implies, Mid-Day Squares was created to satisfy mid-day hunger and cravings. While their products are indeed great for afternoon fuel, I also love their Peanut Butta Chocolate flavor as a movie time treat. These superfood squares are made with oats, date syrup, hazelnut butter, and a surprising ingredient: Jerusalem artichoke powder. 

Yasso Greek Yogurt Bars.

If you’re craving ice cream, Yasso Greek Yogurt Bars are a nice low-cal alternative for movie night. I’ve yet to meet a Yasso bar that I didn’t like, but my favorite flavors are their Coffee Chocolate Chip & Mint Chocolate Chip bars.  

Vita Coco Coconut Water. 

If you’re a fan of tropical drinks and are steering clear of unhealthy beverages like soda, Vita Coco Coconut Water may be just the thing your movie night needs.

My toddler loves coconut water. I give it to her as a “special” drink in lieu of juice because it provides a nice dose of electrolytes and nutrients. 

Perfect Snacks Peanut Butter Cups. 

Perfect Snacks’ Peanut Butter Cups have been a go-to snack of mine when I’m craving chocolate for awhile. These are not your average peanut butter cups – they’re so much better! In addition to dark chocolate and peanut butter, the ingredient list features a blend of whole foods powders that includes kale, flax seed, papaya, alfalfa, carrot, spinach and more (none of which you can taste). My favorite is their Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt flavor, and I find it to be such a satisfying snack.

    Yasso bars are great and I love all the flavor choices. That popcorn looks really good I have to find that. Popcorn is one of my go to snacks

    Hippeas sound great, I need to try them! I also have been wanting to try kombucha. I tried it once years ago and didn’t love it but I want to give it another go.

    What a great collection! We love curling up on the couch with snacks, and this list hits everything from sweet to savory. Laura loves (!!) Swedish Fish, so I’ll have to grab some of those DelishFish for her to try. And congrats on the movie night – things are getting better for sure!

La Jolla is an ever popular area, but for good reason… It’s one of the most beautiful areas in San Diego ☀️ & my favorite time of year to visit is NOW when it’s Harbor Seals Pupping Season! 🦭

📍Casa Beach is closed off from humans from mid-December through mid-May for birthing & bonding, and most of the seal pups are born in February & March. They are so much fun to watch!

Last weekend we got to ride on the world’s largest rotating aerial tram car, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway 🌴⛰️ Guests travel 6,000 feet up in just 10 minutes! 

Once we reached the top, we hiked a couple miles of trails in Mount San Jacinto State Park - where it was only 37 degrees and windy, brr! - and took in the beautiful views. 

Here are a few tips for optimizing a Palm Springs Aerial Tramway adventure: 

✨Show up early. We didn’t realize how big of a production this excursion would be, and when we arrived at 11 am, the wait time was 2 hours to ride the tramway. If I could do it over, I would show up at opening time. 

✨Bring breakfast. While they do have food options while you wait for your tram ride, it’s stereotypical not very healthy American food. Pick up food at a local cafe and bring it with you to enjoy outside. We love @palmgreenscafe!

✨ Bring extra clothes. The temperature at 8,500 ft elevation varies from 20-40 degrees colder, so make sure to pack a jacket, sweatshirt, hat, even gloves.

Who else is pumped for the Olympics to start?! 🇺🇸

This curling competition experiment is a hit with my kiddo! Here’s how to make it: 

You’ll need: 
✨A rimmed baking sheet
✨Aluminum foil 
✨Permanent markers (we used black + red) 
✨A variety of pebbles 
✨Optional: buttons, craft pom-poms and other objects to experiment playing with 

1️⃣ Spread foil across your baking sheet. Draw the starting line on 1 side and a small circle inside a large circle on the other side. 

2️⃣ Place your “rink” in the freezer, then fill it with water halfway up the sides. Chill until it’s totally frozen. 

3️⃣ Time to play! Each player picks 3 pebbles. Take turns using a finger to push your pebble towards the target. 

🥌 Pebbles that land in the inner circle = 3 points each 
🥌 Pebbles that land in the outer circle = 1 point each
🥌 3 rounds = 1 game 

❗️Players can hit other pebbles & knock them out of the circles, which is fun! 

❗️Once all players use their pebbles, that’s the end of round 1. Tally the scores as you go!

Welcome to my new series, Easy Plant-Based Meals, where I share simple, nutritious meals that I make for my family on the regular. 🥦🥕🥬🧅🧄🫘🫑
 
Today I’m making Garlic Pearled Couscous with Roasted Chickpeas & Veggies. 

Here are the ingredients you need to serve 4: 

1️⃣ 2-3 boxes of Near East Pearled Couscous with Roasted Garlic & Olive Oil (I find that 3 boxes yield about 4.5 cups; you can also use a plain pearled couscous)
2️⃣ 1 can garbanzo beans 
3️⃣ 4 TSP avocado oil 
4️⃣ 1 zucchini 
5️⃣ 1 bell pepper
6️⃣ 2T-1/4 cup pine nuts, optional but I like the added heart-healthy crunch
7️⃣ Salt, pepper & paprika to taste 

Directions:
1️⃣ Preheat oven to 375. Drain & rinse chickpeas, then add to a baking dish. Add 2 TSP of avocado oil, and a nice sprinkle of salt, pepper, and paprika to taste. Mix it up, then cook for 25 minutes, stirring halfway through. 

2️⃣ Cook the couscous according to the box directions. 

3️⃣ Heat 2 tsp avocado oil in a sauté pan over medium-low heat. Chop the zucchini and bell pepper, add a sprinkle of salt & pepper, then cook until tender. 

4️⃣ Lightly toast the pine nuts. 

5️⃣ Plate the couscous, add the roasted chickpeas & veggies on top, & sprinkles pine nuts onto each plate. Enjoy!

🌎 The largest National Park in the contiguous U.S. - 3.4 million acres! - did not disappoint 🔥 Here’s what we had on our agenda for Day 2️⃣ of exploring Death Valley National Park: 

📍Explore the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
🛷Go sledding down the dunes! 
🥾Hike Mosaic Canyon Trail ~ a 3.5-mile out & back trail with 974 ft elevation gain. This trail was so much fun & the rock formations are gorgeous! My daughter loved climbing & bouldering around. It features some cool slot canyons and difficult rock scrambling - our kinda speed! 
🚰 Refuel at Stovepipe Wells Village ~ Nearby pitstop within the park for gas, restrooms, a general store & restaurants
