{Throwback Thursday} Warrior Pose: How Yoga (Literally) Saved My Life *Book Review & Interview*

Hi friends!

Since my week of posting is a little out of whack due to my traveling on Monday and not posting as I usually do, and since my friend Brittany just started a Throwback Thursday link-up, I decided to join in on the fun with her today!

My Own Balance

The gist of Throwback Thursday is for bloggers to revive older blog posts that we like, and today I’m republishing a post that I originally shared in June 2013 about the book Warrior Pose: How Yoga (Literally) Saved My Life. The author owns a yoga studio here in San Diego, and I really want to visit there and meet him in person sometime.

This original post was a book giveaway, so I edited that section around this time around. But I really enjoyed reading the book and interviewing its author, so I wanted to share my review of it and conversation with him once again. Here we go!

—

Growing up with a grandfather who taught (and at age 81 [edit: he’s now 83!], still teaches) yoga, I was exposed to the teachings of yoga and meditation at an early age. Back then, I remember feeling so bored during the meditation parts of class and thinking that everyone was just taking a nap. I was too young for the purpose of meditation to resonate in my mind. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to learn that the poses and meditation are only two aspects of yoga. It’s a way of life that has the power to permeate into every aspect of your world. As Bhava Ram, the yoga guru whose book, Warrior Pose: How Yoga (Literally) Saved My Life, exclaimed as we spoke last week, “Yoga is the greatest science ever created on how to be a human being.”

Enjoying the book at the beach

Enjoying the book at the beach

Warrior Pose is the story of Brad Willis (whose taken on the yoga name Bhava Ram), an ambitious journalist whose career took him to the middle of major conflicts and events in places like Afghanistan, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, Kurdistan and Hong Kong. In the book, Willis talks about his experiences as a reporter and the sometimes heartbreaking things he witnessed. I found this aspect of the book to be educational, giving me a sort of inside look to events that happened when I was either not born yet or just a kid. In reading about his travels and work, I could sense that Bhava is a unique person who was really motivated to make a positive difference in the world through his journalism.

Warrior Pose is also the story of Brad Willis’ pharmaceutical-induced nightmare, gradually brought on after a fall that caused a mildly broken back. After years of ignoring the injury and covering the pain up with alcohol and pills, Willis’ unwillingness to put his life on hold to take time to heal his back leads to a majorly broken back. He soon also learns of another medical horror – that he has stage IV thyroid cancer. Fallen into a deep abyss, the chronic pain and illness consumes Willis until one day, his loved ones stage an intervention and Willis agrees to get help. Constantly motivated by the phrase Get Up, Daddy!, something his young son said to him one day when Willis was far from able to easily jump up out of his chair, Willis embarks on a journey to try to get his life back.

Willis finds hope at an unconventional treatment program that focuses on mind-body medicine such as biofeedback and Jin Shin Jyutsu. It’s through this program that he is introduced to yoga, which he truly believes will be the key to helping him heal. Willis wholeheartedly devotes most of his time and energy into yoga to remove the toxins in his body and mind. Remarkably, Willis eventually heals his back – which could not be fixed with fusion surgery and Western medicine – and rids himself of the cancer that he once believed would claim his life within a few years. It’s almost too miraculous to believe it to be true, but Bhava, whose yoga name translates to “Pure State of Being in the Heart,” is living, breathing proof of the healing power of positive thinking, and how resilient the human body can be when the mind makes a positive shift.

Bhava Ram

I was lucky enough to get to chat with Bhava last week and ask him some questions. He seemed as lovely a person as I’d imagined him to be while reading about his journey. I wanted to share a couple highlights of our conversation:

ME: When you talk about the chronic pain consuming your life and causing you to be cranky, snappy, and having no tolerance for anything, you say, “I don’t like myself this way, but I can’t figure out how to turn it around.” For anyone out there, whether they’re suffering from an illness or injury or not, who feels like they’re stuck in a negative place, what would you say should be their first step to getting out of their mental funk?

BHAVA: I’d say that learning to truly believe in themselves is the first step, to realize that there’s always a way out. Miracles do happen. I’ve found that when you look deep inside and start to make positive changes, the whole world sort of rises up to support you in that effort. Having faith in yourself and knowing that you were born with a great power for transformation is life changing.

ME: What are the greatest misconceptions about yoga?

BHAVA: Most people think that yoga is just poses and postures, but there are so many aspects to it. There’s a philosophical piece, a medical piece, a nutritional piece, a breath work aspect, a nutritional piece, meditation, and poses and postures. Yoga is the greatest science ever created on how to be a human being. People also think that yoga is a religion, but it’s really about unifying the deeper inner being, regardless or religion or spiritual belief. The word yoga means unification, so it’s about harmony, not exclusivity of any kind.

ME: If you could give people one healthy living tip, what would it be?

BHAVA: I’d say to connect more with nature – being in nature more often, eating what nature produces, and unplugging from mass media and allowing only more natural impressions into your mind. It’s really just about finding that which is more natural and harmonious.

Being such a quote lover and believer in the power of positivity, I highlighted some thoughts throughout the book that resonated with me. I’ll leave you with two of my favorite paragraphs from Warrior Pose:

“I’ve learned that humility and softness are far more powerful than the sharp edges of bravado and hubris of my earlier years. That accepting what is takes more courage than forcing what I think should be. That judgments, opinions, and the need to be right cant be great hindrances. That it’s always better to give rather than to receive. Affirm rather than criticize. Serve rather than be served. I’ve also learned to be grateful for the smallest, more ordinary things. The morning light. A sip of water. A breath of fresh air. The privilege of being alive.

Yoga has taught me that a fundamental principle of life is that energy follows intention. When we create a strong intention and really believe in it, the world magically seeks to support us. People who think positively and have faith in something are vastly more likely to manifest it than those who feel doubtful and negative. It still takes great devotion and hard work, but it always starts with the mind. One of the great ancient texts of Yoga puts it well: ‘Your thoughts determine your actions. Your actions create your habits. Your habits form your character. Your character determines your destiny.’”

Tell me… Have you read any good books lately? Any questions about Warrior Pose or its author?

This is awesome!! I seriously love it! Such a great reminder that I need to do more yoga!! LOVE it! …also that quote, “Your thoughts determine your actions. Your actions create your habits. Your habits form your character. Your character determines your destiny.” Seriously… couldn’t agree more!

I love that your grandfather taught yoga! I JUST learned that my dad had a yoga phase back in the 70s and I love hearing about that. I think that really speaks to their souls, if you know what I mean. Your questions are great too — yoga is an all-encompassing lifestyle, it’s not just some poses. And if you follow it to a T, I think it really can be life-changing. I’m lucky I don’t experience any chronic pain right now, but I know if I did I would totally invest my life to yoga.

Thanks girl! My grandfather STILL teaches yoga, and he’s 84! Isn’t that awesome? He walks with a cane and has a horrible back but somehow still teaches classes.

I love the idea of bringing back old content! There are so many great things hiding away in the archives. This book sounds really interesting too. I’m not big into yoga but it’s something I’d love to improve with because it seems like it’s so beneficial for the body and mind.

It definitely is! I go through phases where sometimes I’m more devoted to yoga than others, but I know that I can always come to my mat to de-stress and find balance (both physically and mentally!).

Thank you so much for participating in Throwback Thursday!!!! I’m so sorry I’m only getting to comment now! I really appreciate you linking up!

This sounds like such an amazing book. I really believe that yoga has healing powers that go beyond medicine because it relies so deeply on the mind/body connection.

Thanks lady, I enjoyed participating! 🙂 I totally agree, I think that the importance of the mind/body connection can’t be overstated. They talk in the book about the scientific research that has shown just how important it is to be mentally in the right place when your body is physically struggling.

Confession: I’m not at all a big meal prepper❗️But, there are a few things I make most weeks that help make healthy eating simple:

1️⃣ I bake a bunch of sweet potatoes. Then, I can easily use them for a veggie side, make sweet potato pancakes, or to incorporate into a healthy dinner - plus, sweet potatoes are always a winner with my 5 year old, so they’re a “safe” veggie I like to have around.

2️⃣ Two, I whip up a batch of energy bites. I pack them with ingredients like hemp seeds, nut butters, and oats, and they’re great for both a grab and go snack for everyone in the house + a homemade kindergarten snack instead of packing a packaged bar.

3️⃣I make a few cups of brown rice. Rice is so versatile, and I’ll use it for a few weeknight dinners, such as rice and beans, in burritos & with sautéed veggies and chickpeas.

Who else is NOT a big meal prepper?!

PS - Check out my new blueberry energy bite recipe in my stories today! It’s also my first #linkinbio.

Unpopular opinion: We put too much pressure on Mother’s Day.

Sure, it’s a day when moms can be pampered, choose what they want to do, and kick back a little bit more than usual…

..but if your kid throws a tantrum or your husband forgets to get you a gift or everything doesn’t go according to plan, in reality, it’s just another day.

Moms should be thanked by their families any day of the week.
Moms should feel “free” to not do it all any day of the month.
Moms should be able to practice self-care, guilt-free, any day of the year.

Leave a ‘❤️’ if you’re all about dropping the unrealistic expectations & just having a fun family day on Mother’s Day!

I’ve really been enjoying wine country living over the past 1.5 years! 🥂☀️So far I’ve tasted at almost half of the nearly 50 wineries, & here are the stand outs for me thus far:

MY FAVORITES —
-Monte de Oro ~ Joined their wine club & have hung out here countless times 🙌🏼 Their wines are awesome, the staff is friendly & they have an expansive patio. Bonus: they decorate so wonderfully for Christmas! @montedeoro
-Leoness ~ Yummy reds, the views here are lovely & they usually have live music Fri-Sun, + their beautifully curated store is my favorite in the valley for grabbing wine country gifts. Also joined the wine club @leonesscellars

GREAT FOR PICNICKING —
-Masia de La Vinya ~ Offering Spanish style wines & lots of outdoor seating on their patio, patrons are free to bring food to this boutique winery Sun-Fri @masiadelavinyawinery (note: children are not allowed on Saturdays)

MY TOP PICK FOR A DATE —
-Europa ~ Offering not one, not two, but THREE tasting rooms (Italian, Spanish & French styles), Europa has picturesque grounds, a resort & Spanish restaurant, making it a perfect pick to relax at & stay awhile! @europavillage

FUN WITH KIDS —
-Peltzer ~ @peltzerwinery has some great kid-friendly events, including a fall pumpkin patch, winter skating rink & movie nights. Note: Most of the time they’re only kid-friendly Sun-Thurs.
-Longshadow Ranch ~ @longshadowranchwinery is a Temecula winery with a western flair that has animals to visit with, regular family-friendly events & a small playground to entertain kiddos while the adults try the wines. Also nice for picnicking! Try their port in a chocolate boot 🍫 I’ve also heard they regularly have bonfire nights, which are on my bucket list to make it to soon.
