An Update on My Life as a Homeowner

Hey there! Hope that you had a fabulous weekend. My weekend was pretty wild (literally – I spent it in the wild!), but more on that later this week.

Since I’ve been a homeowner now for 4 months (whew, where has the time gone?!) and some of you have asked for decor updates, I thought I’d talk today about what life has been like on the house front and show you a few highlights of my place. I’ve certainly been loving life in Southern California since making the decision to move back!

IMG_5509

My favorite room in my house is definitely the kitchen, not that this is a surprise to anyone. It’s nice and open with plenty of room, which I can especially appreciate having lived in an apartment with a tiny kitchen in the past.

Kitchen

The house came with wall shelves in the kitchen, which I promptly decorated with my many, many wine glasses. I also have a wine rack and tapestry in another part of the kitchen, and there’s lots of other wine decor around. This room makes the wino in me very happy!

Kitchen Collage

Also in the kitchen is what I like to think of as my Venetian area. My parents gave me the below painting as a house warming gift, and on either side of that sits two canvas prints of pictures I took while in Venice last year. The piano that my hubby gave me for my birthday in August sits pretty in there.

piano room

Fun tidbit: We had the piano tuned after we moved it in, and found out that the piano is nearly 100 years old. Pretty neat right? We’ve got a bit of an antique on our hands!

Speaking of canvas prints, I’m kind of obsessed with them. I take a photo that I’ve shot and buy a Groupon or Living Social deal to put it on canvas at a really reasonable price. I also have a San Diego sunset canvas, one of a picture from my trip to Hawaii, and a photo I took during wine harvest season in Livermore Valley last year in my house. They’re so fun!

Canvas Prints Collage

My living room has a cozy, lovey kind of vibe to it – with blankets and pillows everywhere, and photos of my hubby and me and our loved ones all around. We have a fireplace in there that we’ve yet to test out, and Harley definitely does a lot of hanging out in that room, as you can see below. Living Room Collage

We also have 3 bedrooms – one that serves as the office, one master and one guest room. The office and guest room are not yet anything special and still need some work, and the master is finished but pretty cozy, so I’ll move on to my favorite place to sip a smoothie, drink some wine or listen to some music… the backyard!

patio lounging

After doing much research into finding a patio furniture set, I finally found one last summer that was cute, comfy and didn’t break the bank. I love our canopy area and eat dinner out there often.

patio furniture

This summer I managed to not kill everything before getting lots of herbs, tomatoes, and pretty flowers to enjoy. Every time I saw a new batch of baby heirloom tomatoes pop up I’d get excited, and I love being able to snip off some basil or parsley for a meal.

IMG_4931

I was also pleasantly surprised when the overgrown, dead plants that were in the backyard when I moved in started to grow gorgeous roses once they were trimmed and watered. Aren’t they just beautiful?! IMG_5399

Don’t get the wrong idea, home owning has definitely not just been all roses and sunshine. It’s interesting to find all these “surprises” after you’ve moved in, especially when you only saw the home once before buying it as I did, fully furnished at the time nonetheless. Let’s just say that the owners before us loved to hang up tons of stuff with long, crazy nails, and do things the cheap and lazy way. I’m talking brushing a different color paint on the wall and just leaving it there, and leaving the entertainment center where it is and painting around it. I wish I was joking!

Case in point: They left a nice “shed” – if you can call it that – full of junk for us to clean up along the side of the house. So sweet of them right?

Shed Collage

I think we might plant the garden over there next year since it’s a somewhat shaded area and because those are baby lemon and lime trees already planted there (which have started to produce some fruit!). We also have a crazy flourishing orange tree in the front yard, which people in the neighborhood frequently ask if they can pick from.

We also had a crazy ant situation going on when we moved in. I tried every natural and pet-friendly remedy around before finally losing my mind at the many hundreds of ants infesting mostly my kitchen and bedroom, and called an exterminator to come spray around the house. Best.move.ever. We have not seen any ants in the house in the months since, and happily I’m no longer having nightmares about swarms of ants crawling all over me. I’m getting itchy just typing that!

pool view

Over the past couple of months I’ve learned that being a pool owner is a bit like being a chemist. You have to keep everything balanced for it all to work right, and that took a bit to get the hang of. Let’s just say that the employees at Leslie’s Pool Supplies know our faces well.

There are definitely a lot of things that I’d like to eventually accomplish with the house, including repainting and updating some things (I’m pushing for new kitchen appliances sometime in the near future!). What’s nice is that the house is very livable as is, so there’s no huge rush. House projects tend to take up a ton of time, and we normally like to go have fun and enjoy SoCal on the weekends, so the improvements have been slow-moving… but eventually we’ll get there. I hope so at least!

Are you a homeowner? What’s your home decor style like? What would your dream house include?

Spread the love

What a beautiful house! I love your decor. Your kitchen is beautiful! I’m always envious of anyone who has more than two square feet of counter space 🙂

Thanks! I hear ya, I’ve been there with an itty bitty kitchen. It definitely is nice to feel less claustrophobic when I have 3 cutting boards full of chopped veggies and ingredients strewn about everywhere on my counters!

New reader here- congrats on the home and LOVE the kitchen!! We bought a house about a year and a half ago and I quickly learned that decorating a house is NOT cheap! We are piecing it together one by one and our recent wedding registry helped a little too!

Hi Katie! Thanks for reading. You’re definitely right, all of the little things add up and the big things are always very pricey! We found out after we moved in that the previous owners put a filter that is way too small for the pool in. I’m sure they knew and were probably just being cheapos, which is frustrating, and it’s even more frustrating because a bigger one is going to set us back more than a pretty penny. Ah well, like you said, you just have to piece it all together little by little 🙂

I love your house! It is so pretty and very personalized, which gives it a great homey feel! I would give my first born for a big kitchen (just don’t tell him that!). Our kitchen is so frustratingly small! I also love your canvas prints!

I love your house! I’m especially jealous of your garden. Those tomatoes are gorgeous!

And I wonder if the ant problem is a California thing because we had them really bad a few weeks ago. I accidentally left a sugar bag open in the pantry and they were coming in like crazy! This is on the second floor too. Thankfully as soon as I put the sugar in the fridge, they stopped coming. I’m thinking it might have something to do with the drought. But I’m glad to hear you finally got the problem solved!

YES! Ants are really bad in California since it doesn’t get cold enough to kill them in the cooler months. I’ve known so many people that have dealt with ant issues. When I walk Harley around my neighborhood, there are SO MANY ANTS EVERYWHERE! I’m glad to be ant-free for the time being 🙂

You house is beautiful and HUGE. Here in London very few people can afford such a big place, it would costs several millions of pounds 🙁 The housing situation here is unbearable. I like the way you have decorated the shelves in the kitchen!

Wow, I had no idea that London is that ridiculously expensive! California isn’t cheap either – we actually moved from the San Fran area back down to the San Diego area because the cost of living up there is insane!

La Jolla is an ever popular area, but for good reason… It’s one of the most beautiful areas in San Diego ☀️ & my favorite time of year to visit is NOW when it’s Harbor Seals Pupping Season! 🦭

📍Casa Beach is closed off from humans from mid-December through mid-May for birthing & bonding, and most of the seal pups are born in February & March. They are so much fun to watch!

Last weekend we got to ride on the world’s largest rotating aerial tram car, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway 🌴⛰️ Guests travel 6,000 feet up in just 10 minutes!

Once we reached the top, we hiked a couple miles of trails in Mount San Jacinto State Park - where it was only 37 degrees and windy, brr! - and took in the beautiful views.

Here are a few tips for optimizing a Palm Springs Aerial Tramway adventure:

✨Show up early. We didn’t realize how big of a production this excursion would be, and when we arrived at 11 am, the wait time was 2 hours to ride the tramway. If I could do it over, I would show up at opening time.

✨Bring breakfast. While they do have food options while you wait for your tram ride, it’s stereotypical not very healthy American food. Pick up food at a local cafe and bring it with you to enjoy outside. We love @palmgreenscafe!

✨ Bring extra clothes. The temperature at 8,500 ft elevation varies from 20-40 degrees colder, so make sure to pack a jacket, sweatshirt, hat, even gloves.

Who else is pumped for the Olympics to start?! 🇺🇸

This curling competition experiment is a hit with my kiddo! Here’s how to make it:

You’ll need:
✨A rimmed baking sheet
✨Aluminum foil
✨Permanent markers (we used black + red)
✨A variety of pebbles
✨Optional: buttons, craft pom-poms and other objects to experiment playing with

1️⃣ Spread foil across your baking sheet. Draw the starting line on 1 side and a small circle inside a large circle on the other side.

2️⃣ Place your “rink” in the freezer, then fill it with water halfway up the sides. Chill until it’s totally frozen.

3️⃣ Time to play! Each player picks 3 pebbles. Take turns using a finger to push your pebble towards the target.

🥌 Pebbles that land in the inner circle = 3 points each
🥌 Pebbles that land in the outer circle = 1 point each
🥌 3 rounds = 1 game

❗️Players can hit other pebbles & knock them out of the circles, which is fun!

❗️Once all players use their pebbles, that’s the end of round 1. Tally the scores as you go!

✨Idea from @kiwico_inc’s Winter Wonders experiment book

Welcome to my new series, Easy Plant-Based Meals, where I share simple, nutritious meals that I make for my family on the regular. 🥦🥕🥬🧅🧄🫘🫑

Today I’m making Garlic Pearled Couscous with Roasted Chickpeas & Veggies.

Here are the ingredients you need to serve 4:

1️⃣ 2-3 boxes of Near East Pearled Couscous with Roasted Garlic & Olive Oil (I find that 3 boxes yield about 4.5 cups; you can also use a plain pearled couscous)
2️⃣ 1 can garbanzo beans
3️⃣ 4 TSP avocado oil
4️⃣ 1 zucchini
5️⃣ 1 bell pepper
6️⃣ 2T-1/4 cup pine nuts, optional but I like the added heart-healthy crunch
7️⃣ Salt, pepper & paprika to taste

Directions:
1️⃣ Preheat oven to 375. Drain & rinse chickpeas, then add to a baking dish. Add 2 TSP of avocado oil, and a nice sprinkle of salt, pepper, and paprika to taste. Mix it up, then cook for 25 minutes, stirring halfway through.

2️⃣ Cook the couscous according to the box directions.

3️⃣ Heat 2 tsp avocado oil in a sauté pan over medium-low heat. Chop the zucchini and bell pepper, add a sprinkle of salt & pepper, then cook until tender.

4️⃣ Lightly toast the pine nuts.

5️⃣ Plate the couscous, add the roasted chickpeas & veggies on top, & sprinkles pine nuts onto each plate. Enjoy!

🌎 The largest National Park in the contiguous U.S. - 3.4 million acres! - did not disappoint 🔥 Here’s what we had on our agenda for Day 2️⃣ of exploring Death Valley National Park:

📍Explore the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
🛷Go sledding down the dunes!
🥾Hike Mosaic Canyon Trail ~ a 3.5-mile out & back trail with 974 ft elevation gain. This trail was so much fun & the rock formations are gorgeous! My daughter loved climbing & bouldering around. It features some cool slot canyons and difficult rock scrambling - our kinda speed!
🚰 Refuel at Stovepipe Wells Village ~ Nearby pitstop within the park for gas, restrooms, a general store & restaurants
