My Bio Individuality: Why I Eat the Way I Do

Since I began school at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I’ve thought a lot about bio individuality — the idea that no one diet is ideal for everyone. I just wrote an article for Girls Gone Sporty that talks more about it – check it out here! – and realized that although it’s pretty evident that I’m a vegetarian by reading my blog, I’ve never really discussed why I eat the way that I do. This is a post I’ve hesitated to write, but today I’m talking about it!

Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved animals and felt compassion for them. When I see bacon festivals publicizing their events with pictures of cute, happy looking pigs, I cringe. Pigs are intelligent animals, smarter than dogs research has shown, yet we keep dogs as pets and kill pigs so that we can top everything from omelets and burgers to ice cream and donuts with bacon.

Even as a young kid, I could never separate the meat on my plate from the animals I would see alive and well. The concept of an animal walking around breathing the air on this earth, then me eating a piece of its flesh for dinner the next week just never made sense to me. That’s why in a family full of meat eaters, I became a vegetarian at age 10 and have never gone back.

Truth be told, I love being a vegetarian. As a teenager, I do remember having times where I felt like the odd girl out for not eating a hamburger at BBQs or chicken nuggets from fast food joints, but once I grew up and realized that it doesn’t bother me if I’m different than the norm, it has felt nothing but right to me to live this way. The more research I’ve done, books I’ve read, and films I’ve watched on the meat industry and the environmental implications of eating meat, the more confident and steadfast I feel in my way of life being the healthiest and smartest choice for me.

So, exactly what foods do I eat often?

My Diet

I go heavy on the whole foods (fruits & veggies, beans & legumes for protein), whole grains (rice, wraps, pasta, etc.), and also eat a good amount of dairy, mostly in the form of Greek yogurt, cheese, and whey protein (although I’m still unsure if dairy affects my allergies — I’ve been considering going vegan for a bit to see, so that’s to be determined!). I love sweet foods and eat fruit like it’s nobody’s business, and I tend to have to make more of a concerted effort to fit a lot of veggies into my diet. A pretty high ratio of the food I take in comes from good-for-you carbs. I love my healthy fats, and eat nut butters, avocado, olive oil, and nuts all the time in small portions. Eating this way makes me feel energetic, strong and healthy. Though I love me some dessert or a bowl of pasta sometimes, if I eat a lot of heavy foods and/or too many sweets, I feel lethargic, tired and bloated.

Thinking back, perhaps I should have called myself a picky foodie. I really do love food. The joke is that I’ll try it just as long as it’s not anything that had a face!

I typically don’t at all feel limited by my vegetarianism in terms of variety in foods that I eat — unless I’m a restaurant or sporting event with nothing but carnivorous options, which happens once in a blue moon. I usually plan accordingly and have a protein bar in my purse or have eaten beforehand. There really are a ton of vegetarian foods to eat, it was just a matter of getting familiar with them and broadening my horizons as I became an adult.

In one of my lectures, the founder of IIN said something that stuck with me. He made the statement that diet isn’t religion, that it’s just food and it doesn’t need to be taken so seriously. On some level, I agree with this — I think that people have the right to eat whatever way they want, and who knows, my diet might change later in life.

But on the other hand, vegetarianism is more than just a way of eating. It’s more of a lifestyle. On a personal level, it’s saying that I don’t need to eat dead animals to be healthy, alive, and strong. It’s taking a stance against the meat industry, where so much abuse, neglect, and plain old nastiness takes place that consumers will mostly never know about, or care to know about because they like their meat and would rather stay in the dark. Like Paul McCartney said, “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.”

I won’t get too much in depth into this, but the most frequent negative response I get to being a vegetarian is people saying, “Humans are meant to eat meat.” But my question is, are we “meant” to eat meat just because the start of humankind ate meat because they had no other alternative? Is it right to do things just because they’ve always been done, especially if this way of life is harming our planet and our health?

Yes, human beings at the beginning of time ate meat, but have we forgotten about all of the time they spent and energy and effort they expended to hunt that meat, instead of picking it up at the local Acme or getting a burger from McDonald’s? Let’s just say that I agree that humans are meant to incorporate meat into their diets on some level. Even if that was that case, I don’t believe we were meant to pump our animals full of hormones and antibiotics, feed them diets that aren’t natural to them, then put that flesh into our own bodies all the damn time. Thankfully the organic and local meat production movement has grown in recent times, but it’s still a small percentage of the meat that people consume.

In all honesty, I’ve felt sort of torn, because I love and respect the idea of bio-individuality and think that it is extremely important to figure out what diet works best for you and your body. But on the other hand, I have qualms with the way the meat industry operates and agree with the above James Cameron quote. Even if the meat industry did run under more acceptable conditions, I still feel strongly that people rely too heavily on meat.

Because I do believe in the power of bio-individuality and know that finding a healthy diet that works for people as unique individual can do wonders in improving lives, I can respect that people can love their chicken, enjoy their steak, and be obsessed with bacon. Personally I just can’t relate, but I can respect that that’s their prerogative, whether I believe it to be healthful or not.

I suppose that in my perfect world, everyone would care more about where their food was coming from and how it got on their plate. Meat eaters would eat their meat in small portions instead of double bacon cheeseburgers. I’m all about the fair treatment of the animals whose lives are being sacrificed for people’s meals, which is why organic, local, ethically raised and slaughtered meat is the humane way to go if you do eat meat.

    Great post Nicole! I do eat meat but I am not a huge meat fan. I eat meat in small portions and tend to rely more on veggies and grains. I do eat a lot of seafood though. At least with the seafood and fish industry, the idea of sustainable fishing has become pretty popular. I do love the idea of bio-individuality and being able to choose what you want to eat. I also think that people do need to be educated about where their food comes from (even fruit and veg!) so we can make decisions about what we will and will not eat.

      Absolutely! I think we need to care about where all of our food comes from, not just meat. True, sustainable fishing has definitely become more popular. We have overfished so much of our waters so I’m happy that it has gotten a lot of attention.

    I couldn’t have said it better myself!
    I agree with the general idea that a person’s diet shouldn’t be restricted or complicated but it’s not that easy when you have a conscience for the cruelty that takes place behind closed doors (or sometimes on display).
    I feel like some people make vegetarianism and veganism out to be a food disorder because we’re telling ourselves certain things are off limits and that way of thinking drives me insane. But we are all different and that’s what gives us our bio-individuality, right? 😉

      Yes, you put that very well – having a conscience for what happens at slaughter houses. Yeah, I think that some people are so unfamiliar with the idea of vegetarianism because they’ve always eaten meat and have never thought too much about it.

    Great post! I agree with you on this one! When I went completely vegetarian for a year, that is when I lost weight and felt great! Then I got lazy after a surgery last year and started eating it again. Since then – 11 months ago – I’ve gained about 10 pounds, and I notice little things here and there that I know are a result from eating meat. The last few weeks I’ve been trying to cut back to just ONE day a week where I will eat meat. And then, it’s “healthier” – bison from a local farmer where they don’t abuse the buffalo or use hormones or antibiotics…but even with one day a week, I notice things! I’d like to completely give it up again, but then sometimes when i’m out, I just want it! It wasn’t hard the first time giving it up, but it IS hard this time! I think I need to go back and watch some of the documentaries that made it easy for me to give up….

      Interesting, I didn’t know that you used to be vegetarian! I think that if your body is telling you that it’s craving meat here and there, you should eat it. I think that you’re going the right route with being conscious about what type of meat you’re putting into your body – that makes a big difference. Eating meat only 1 day a week might be the best option for you at this time, and that’s okay!

La Jolla is an ever popular area, but for good reason… It’s one of the most beautiful areas in San Diego ☀️ & my favorite time of year to visit is NOW when it’s Harbor Seals Pupping Season! 🦭

📍Casa Beach is closed off from humans from mid-December through mid-May for birthing & bonding, and most of the seal pups are born in February & March. They are so much fun to watch!

Last weekend we got to ride on the world’s largest rotating aerial tram car, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway 🌴⛰️ Guests travel 6,000 feet up in just 10 minutes! 

Once we reached the top, we hiked a couple miles of trails in Mount San Jacinto State Park - where it was only 37 degrees and windy, brr! - and took in the beautiful views. 

Here are a few tips for optimizing a Palm Springs Aerial Tramway adventure: 

✨Show up early. We didn’t realize how big of a production this excursion would be, and when we arrived at 11 am, the wait time was 2 hours to ride the tramway. If I could do it over, I would show up at opening time. 

✨Bring breakfast. While they do have food options while you wait for your tram ride, it’s stereotypical not very healthy American food. Pick up food at a local cafe and bring it with you to enjoy outside. We love @palmgreenscafe!

✨ Bring extra clothes. The temperature at 8,500 ft elevation varies from 20-40 degrees colder, so make sure to pack a jacket, sweatshirt, hat, even gloves.

Who else is pumped for the Olympics to start?! 🇺🇸

This curling competition experiment is a hit with my kiddo! Here’s how to make it: 

You’ll need: 
✨A rimmed baking sheet
✨Aluminum foil 
✨Permanent markers (we used black + red) 
✨A variety of pebbles 
✨Optional: buttons, craft pom-poms and other objects to experiment playing with 

1️⃣ Spread foil across your baking sheet. Draw the starting line on 1 side and a small circle inside a large circle on the other side. 

2️⃣ Place your “rink” in the freezer, then fill it with water halfway up the sides. Chill until it’s totally frozen. 

3️⃣ Time to play! Each player picks 3 pebbles. Take turns using a finger to push your pebble towards the target. 

🥌 Pebbles that land in the inner circle = 3 points each 
🥌 Pebbles that land in the outer circle = 1 point each
🥌 3 rounds = 1 game 

❗️Players can hit other pebbles & knock them out of the circles, which is fun! 

❗️Once all players use their pebbles, that’s the end of round 1. Tally the scores as you go!

Welcome to my new series, Easy Plant-Based Meals, where I share simple, nutritious meals that I make for my family on the regular. 🥦🥕🥬🧅🧄🫘🫑
 
Today I’m making Garlic Pearled Couscous with Roasted Chickpeas & Veggies. 

Here are the ingredients you need to serve 4: 

1️⃣ 2-3 boxes of Near East Pearled Couscous with Roasted Garlic & Olive Oil (I find that 3 boxes yield about 4.5 cups; you can also use a plain pearled couscous)
2️⃣ 1 can garbanzo beans 
3️⃣ 4 TSP avocado oil 
4️⃣ 1 zucchini 
5️⃣ 1 bell pepper
6️⃣ 2T-1/4 cup pine nuts, optional but I like the added heart-healthy crunch
7️⃣ Salt, pepper & paprika to taste 

Directions:
1️⃣ Preheat oven to 375. Drain & rinse chickpeas, then add to a baking dish. Add 2 TSP of avocado oil, and a nice sprinkle of salt, pepper, and paprika to taste. Mix it up, then cook for 25 minutes, stirring halfway through. 

2️⃣ Cook the couscous according to the box directions. 

3️⃣ Heat 2 tsp avocado oil in a sauté pan over medium-low heat. Chop the zucchini and bell pepper, add a sprinkle of salt & pepper, then cook until tender. 

4️⃣ Lightly toast the pine nuts. 

5️⃣ Plate the couscous, add the roasted chickpeas & veggies on top, & sprinkles pine nuts onto each plate. Enjoy!

🌎 The largest National Park in the contiguous U.S. - 3.4 million acres! - did not disappoint 🔥 Here’s what we had on our agenda for Day 2️⃣ of exploring Death Valley National Park: 

📍Explore the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes
🛷Go sledding down the dunes! 
🥾Hike Mosaic Canyon Trail ~ a 3.5-mile out & back trail with 974 ft elevation gain. This trail was so much fun & the rock formations are gorgeous! My daughter loved climbing & bouldering around. It features some cool slot canyons and difficult rock scrambling - our kinda speed! 
🚰 Refuel at Stovepipe Wells Village ~ Nearby pitstop within the park for gas, restrooms, a general store & restaurants
