DietBet Week 1 Recap + Letting Go of the All-or-Nothing Healthy Living Mentality

Hi friends!

My post title makes this pretty obvious, but I’m currently participating in a DietBet game. I figure that springtime is the perfect time to shed a couple of pounds and tone up. Each week for the next month I’ll be doing a recap of my weekly progress, as well as discussing an important healthy living theme.

Summer Shake Down

So what is DietBet?  

DietBet is a game that emphasizes online community in helping people to lose weight. I’m participating in Jen Widerstrom’s Summer Shake Down – whose The Biggest Loser trainer – which currently has 2,128 players and a pot of $63,840! For this game, all participants bet $30 on themselves that they can lose 4% of their body weight in a month. Everyone that achieves that goal wins the game and gets to split the pot evenly (after an admin percentage is taken out).

Why am I doing a DietBet?

I did a DietBet once before a few years back (<– whoa, old school blog post!), and I enjoyed participating it in back then, so I figured I’d like doing it again. Some of you may be thinking, “Why is a health coach doing a diet challenge?” But the fact of the matter is that health coaches are human too, and we have our own health challenges.

My Current Favorite San Diego Studio Workouts

Hello, hello!

Today we’re talking about the local workouts that I’ve been loving! Recently I mentioned that I collaborated on a new project with ClassPass, which means that I’ve been a ClassPass workout crazy person. I think I’m sort of on a mission to try all of the awesome workouts that my health-conscious city of San Diego has to offer, and ClassPass is a great way to explore tons of studios in the area.

Last week my friend Trish and I attended a ClassPass event at Core40 in Little Italy. You may recall me talking about Core40 in Solana Beach before because it’s a total butt kicking workout, and this was the first time that I visited their downtown location.

Since I live in the northern part of San Diego County, I haven’t spent much time downtown lately. The class was at night, but I journeyed down there in the afternoon, walked around a bit and soaked up the city vibes, and worked at Panera Bread for awhile.

The event was a combo class – which means that for 25 minutes you spin, and for the remaining 25 minutes, the class gets put to work on Core40’s Superformer machines.

After doing a few of their combo classes, I’ve come to the conclusion that they just don’t work well for my body due to the fact that I already feel fatigued by the time I get to the strength portion, then I proceed to shake like a leaf and feel weak throughout the rest of class (It’s a little crazy!)… but nevertheless, it was an awesome workout that had me working my hardest for sure!

Chocolate Coconut Caramel Smoothie [Vegan & Healthy!]

Like most Americans – any Americans with a sweet tooth, at least – I have Girl Scout cookie memories. Growing up, my mom had a similar sentiment to the food kept in the house as I do now: lots of healthy food, and then a few “goodies” in one cabinet that were treats we broke out after dinner some nights for dessert.

My mom bought Girl Scout cookies, but she would usually get ones that I deemed weird (and that still wouldn’t be my pick today). I remember some sort of shortbread cookie and something with lemon (ick), and then there were the two I liked the most: Thin Mints and Samoas.

This Girl Scout cookie season, I found myself craving the chocolate mint and chocolate coconut caramel flavors that I looked forward to as a kid for dessert at night. This led to me recreate these flavor combinations in smoothie form (this naturally happened since I’m obsessed with smoothies!), and today I’m sharing my healthy Samoas cookie smoothie.

My New Yoga Playlist

Happy Earth Day!

You may remember that a few weeks ago I shared a new playlist that I’ve been rocking out to. Well, when I get on a music downloading and playlist arranging kick, I don’t stop at just one playlist. Besides my latest feel-good workout playlist, I also came up with a new playlist to listen to while I practice yoga.

Besides yoga, I’ve also been listening to this playlist during stretch/foam rolling sessions. It’d also be a good one for those who do barre workouts on their own. The playlist is a combo of slower jams (i.e. Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down”) and more fast-paced songs (like Imagine Dragon’s “I Bet My Life”), and I’m pretty sure that I’m going to keep listening to it for months to come!

Las Vegas Fun: Boating Around Lake Mead & Vegan Dining at Downtown Container Park

Hope that you all had a great weekend. The highlight of my weekend was hanging out in beautiful La Jolla, where my favorite activity is….

…sea lion stalking! It’s the time of the year when all of the mamas give birth and there are lots of sea lions and their pups lounging around. It is too cute!

I so badly want to befriend one and start playing with her, but I let them have their space to soak up the sun. This one lady kept getting a little too close, and the sea lions would look up and let out a I-suggest-you-back-the-hell-up-lady noise.

La Jolla is always packed with people, and it’s no secret as to why. I think the coast there has the most gorgeous views in San Diego, and I’ve taken a lot of my visitors there to walk around, check out the seals, and visit some of the shops and restaurants.

Any who, today I want to back it up a bit to two weekends ago when I arrived in Las Vegas for work. Before the show I was there for started, my co-workers and I got away from work to have some fun in the area. Stereotypical Vegas is not really my thing, so I enjoy exploring outside of the strip every time I’m there.

This trip we decided to go for a boat ride around Lake Mead, which was formed by the Hoover Dam and is the largest reservoir in the country when at full capacity – which it’s nowhere near given the crazy drought that has been taking place. In fact, Lake Mead is currently at about 40% capacity, which is the lowest it’s been since it was built in the 1930s.

5-Ingredient Creamy Honey Fruit Dip

Happy weekend everyone!

I’m looking forward to a few days being home with my hubby. Last week he was away training for the Marine Corps Reserves, and then I left for Vegas for my work trip before he got back last weekend, so this weekend we’re excited to get some time together. On our agenda is finishing up our bathroom revamp, repainting part of the exterior of our house, and also having some fun outdoors and relaxing. Any fun plans for your weekend?

Speaking of weekends, last Friday night I got together with my friend Tiffany for a wine night. We see each other pretty often, but usually we make workout dates, so it was nice to chill, talk, drink wine, and munch on snacks together (and not be sweating while I was with her for once!). For our wine night I whipped up a few healthy dessert-like snacks. I made almond butter date truffles and came up with this 5-ingredient honey fruit dip, which I served with fresh pineapple and strawberries.

7 Healthy Snacks I’m Loving Lately

While some people feel best eating three square meals a day, I’m much more of a small-meals-and-snacks kinda girl. Typically eating something every three or four hours means that I usually have healthy on-the-go munchies in my purse and car, as well a number of favorite healthy quick snacks in mind. Here are some of my current top snack picks:

I’ve declared my love for apples before, and lately one of snacks I’m loving the most is an apple sliced with some peanut/almond/cashew butter and sprinkled with cinnamon. It’s a nice mix of healthy carbs, fat and protein, and nut butter has a way of keeping me from being starving a few hours later.

While I’ve been a fan of Blue Diamond almonds for awhile, recently the company sent me a few flavors of their nuts to try that I hadn’t gotten my hands on yet. Almonds are perfect for an on-the-go snack, and they came especially in handy this week while I’ve been in Las Vegas for work. One night I came back to my hotel room starving, and a few handfuls of Blue Diamond almonds came to the rescue until I had dinner in front of me.

Almonds are one of my favorite nuts, and since I have an obsession with both cinnamon and honey, their honey roasted cinnamon flavor is my favorite. I also like the honey dijon almonds for a bit of salty satisfaction.

20 Minute Cardio Blast Workout

Hi friends, and greetings from Las Vegas!

I traveled to Vegas over the weekend for a work trip and will be here for most of the week. Before the “work” of my work trip really started, yesterday my co-workers and I had some fun outside of the Vegas strip, but more on that later, because today I’ve got a quickie workout to share!

Even when traveling I still like to get some exercise in. If I’m on vacation, I usually find a place for that exercise outdoors in the form of hiking or biking, or just even just walking a ton being a tourist, but with work trips like this, I find myself mostly indoors in a convention center. I do walk an awful lot within the convention center – my poor feet always die wearing heels and other uncomfortable fancy shoes, and I think I was made to be barefoot, or even to just wear sneakers and sandals! – but I still like to fit in some actual sweat time.

The hotel I’m staying at has a pretty nice gym, so this week I’ll be popping in there probably once or twice for quick workouts, and will also do a few online workouts in my hotel room when I can squeeze them in. Here’s a 20 minute cardio blast that’s exactly my type of style for a travel workout: quick and cardio efficient!

*All you need is a set of 3, 5 or 8 pound dumbbells depending on your strength level. You can also forgo the weights if you don’t have them handy. Run through all of the exercises in 30-second intervals, do the whole set 3x, get a quick stretch and cool down in, and you’re done!*

Cinnamon Brown Sugar Banana Bread Cookies

Earlier this week I deemed my hubby and me to be Mr. and Mrs. “Cookie Monster” Crane after we ate an entire batch of these cinnamon brown sugar chocolate chip banana bread cookies in just a couple of days.

We both dig banana bread, which is why I make it at least once every few months. But last Saturday, when I was in full kitchen experimentation mode, I decided to get a little creative and make banana bread cookies instead of a regular old banana bread loaf.

I decided to play around with using brown sugar as the primary sweetener, and then I went heavy duty on the cinnamon (which is partly the reason for the cookies’ dark color) because yummmm, it’s my favorite thing to sprinkle on top of nearly everything I eat. I thought about excluding chocolate chips, but then I thought, ‘Who am I kidding? Everything is better with dark chocolate chips!’

Getting My Zen On at La Jolla’s Trilogy Sanctuary [Yoga Studio Review]

One of the many reasons that I dig living in San Diego is all of its awesome local businesses geared towards healthy living. There’s no shortage of juice bars, veg eateries, fitness studios, spas, yoga centers and lots more around to explore. Being the wellness lover that I am, I experience these places as much as I can.

I’ve teamed up with ClassPass again for a blogger project (more on that to come soon!), so lately I’ve been a fitness class maniac, booking classes at studios all over San Diego County in my never-ending attempt to find the best workouts in the area.

Last week I journeyed over to the beautiful beach town of La Jolla to meet up with a girlfriend of mine for a yoga class at Trilogy Sanctuary. Immediately when I walked in, I was like all, Ooooh! So cute, I love this place!

Situated on the rooftop of a building in the middle of La Jolla’s main shopping and restaurant area, Trilogy Sanctuary gives off laid back SoCal vibes. Not only is it a yoga studio that specializes in aerial yoga, they also have a vegan cafe and juice bar. Diners can lounge on cozy couches and tables and watch the yoga classes, which take place directly next to the cafe.
